Maximize Your PC Sound Quality

I recently received an email from a customer asking me a couple of music hardware related questions. Check out the following questions and answers, as these topics may provide you with some insight with regards to helping you determine how to setup your sound system in the most optimal manner!

Question:

"I currently have a laser- disc karaoke system hooked up to my normal Dolby stereo systems. What should I do to make the sound coming from my system sound better?"

Answer:

The home stereo system is comprised of several components. They all work together to help get the sound from the source (CD/Radio…) to the speakers. Most often, home stereo systems process the sound in such a way that when it comes out of the speakers it will sound good in the home environment. While this amplifier processing can produce a "high fidelity" type of sound that is easy to listen to, it will not necessarily work well when a microphone is being used. Speakers for a home stereo system are designed in a similar way. They too usually accentuate certain frequencies like bass and treble that would not sound good when listening to a live sound source. The home stereo speakers are also more sensitive where a loud pop or scream in a microphone can permanently damage them.

Sounding better can be achieved through a variety of steps. The first and most important step would be finding a suitable microphone. This is where the signal starts. It won’t matter how big or powerful your amplification system is, without a good microphone the sound will only be as good as the weakest link. Second would be a good set of speakers designed for sound reinforcement and the third component would be the amplification.

A beginning karaoke setup could be as follows.

The microphones and CD+G audio signal will be plugged into the mixing amp. In the mixing amp we can adjust the level of the music and microphones as well as the total volume.

Question:

"Should I buy a DVD to play karaoke or CDG player?"

Answer:

If you intend to play CD+Gs then the best choice would certainly be a CD+G player. The CD+G players are more common plus there is more choice. Even the selection of CD+G disks is much larger than any other format. One drawback to DVD players that support CD+G is that some of the newer CD+Gs incorporate a copy protection that makes DVD players unable to read the disks.
